Down in Medina county (Ohio) is one of the best kept secrets, and perfect pre-Halloween family events. It’s the Lester Rail Trail, featuring little steamer rideable trains. This event is sponsored by the Northeastern Ohio Live Steamers group.
My kids, which are currently 8-years old (boy) and 5-years old (girl), both love this event, which happens only two days per year, in early October on a Friday and Saturday. The Northeastern Ohio Live Steamers group allows residents to ride their miniature rideable steamer trains along a 1.5 mile track. The ride goes through meadows and woods, and they decorate it with Halloween for the season.
This event is donation-based. You do not need to pay anything to ride the trains. However, a reasonable donation is appreciated to help the group with their train expenses. This is a hobby for everyone who volunteers their time, and they love sharing their pride with all the little kids and grown-up adults who want to ride.
The Lester Rail Trails do not have an address. But if you need to find them on a GPS, use this address: 3654 Lester Road, Medina, Ohio, and you should be very close to their entrance. This event generates a large crowd, so arrive early. A police officer will be directing traffic into the parking area. Please drive slowly, as young kids are walking around the parking area.
The event takes place Friday, October 16th, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday, October 17th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. While the event has passed this year, mark your calendars for 2012. This is one of those events like the Polar Express that you need to put a reminder on your calendar. We will repost this blog in early-October to remind everyone again.
Lester Rail Trails also offers a Railroad Camp during the summer for kids 10-14 years old.
