Bring an Engineering Club to YOUR SCHOOL!
Classroom Antics is accepting applications from schools for our After-School Enrichment Clubs for kids in grades K-5 for the 2018-2019 School Year in the areas near Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Detroit. Application details and form are below.
- Each module below meets 1/week for 4 weeks, 1.5 hours after-school, totaling 6 hours.
- Modules 1-3 are offered during the Fall.
- Modules 4-6 are offered during the Winter-Spring.
Module 1: Nuts and Bolts
Mechanical Engineering. The world is full of moving parts, so let’s move into the world of mechanical engineers as we learn how to engineer simple machines to make life easier. Even back in Egyptian times, people were making jobs easier using simple tools like wedges and inclines. Imagine carrying those heavy, stone blocks, to the top of the pyramids! In this module, we are going to learn about the simple machines Egyptians used and how they are still used today by making a pom-pom catapult, marble maze, and a mini Rube Goldberg machine. We’ll learn how wedges are used in a cardboard construction set and how wheels and axles can be put together to make an extending grabber. Each week, students will think about how effective simple machines are and how they can be combined into large mechanical equipment we have today.

Module 2: Sounds like Engineering
Acoustic Engineering. Tune into the sounds of acoustic engineering as we explore what makes sounds different from each other, how sound reaches our ears, and how engineers control sound. Whether you’re at a rock concert, cheering for your favorite team, watching a movie, or jamming to the tunes inside your headphones, acoustic engineers have a hand (or rather, an ear) in making those sounds. We’ll demonstrate these sound manipulation techniques through air, water, and solid materials and explore how pitch and frequency affect what we hear. Students will also get a chance to engineer their own pair of noise-dampening headphones and loudspeaker. Throughout this unit, we will analyze the sounds around us and learn how acoustic engineers can change and shape those to be more pleasant.

Module 3: Wacky Weather
Meteorology Engineering. Tornadoes, Thunderstorms, Earthquakes, oh my! Join us in the Wacky Weather module as we learn about the many types of weather, from sunshine, summery days to the more extreme natural disasters. We will learn about how these phenomena happen, and the work engineers are doing to protect people from it. In this module, we will recreate some of the tools meteorologists use, like weathervanes and sundials, as well as engineer some new products to protect houses from mudslides. We will even model the earth as we learn about the different layers and how they cause earthquakes. Throughout this module, students will learn more about meteorology and why the weather is as wacky as it seems.

Module 4: Crazy Chemicals
Chemical Engineering. Chemical engineers apply chemistry to solve problems in our lives from blowing bigger chewing gum bubbles, to creating fuel that blasts spacecrafts further, to making salt water drinkable. In this module, we will learn about different properties of chemicals, like density, acidity, and surface tension. This will teach us the science behind lava lamps, slime, tie-dye, and much more. We will also design soap powered boats and crystalized creations. Lastly, no chemical engineering club would be complete without a vinegar/ baking soda explosion!

Module 5: Planes, Trains, and Auto Engineers
Transportation Engineering. In this module, we will learn all about the different ways people get from one place to another, over land, in water, or through the skies. First, we will study boats and make our own water-crafts and design a survival raft. Next, we will learn about cars and city planning by outlining cities and modeling environmentally-friendly cars. Lastly, we take to the skies and learn about planes – how they work, how they’re designed, and how to make them fly faster and longer. Students will gain an appreciation for all of the ways engineers help people get where they need to go.

Module 6: Gold Medal Engineers
Sports Engineering. Behind every athlete, there are many hours of practice, dedicated coaches and innovative equipment that contribute to their success. In sporting competitions, it is often a single point or fraction of a second between the winner and the loser. Top athletes have to make sure that they have the best equipment possible, and sports engineers are in charge of designing this equipment. Everything from hockey pads to gymnastics floors and baseball bats to ice skates has been improved over the years. In this module, we will learn about the work sports engineers do to both protect athletes and improve their performance at all levels of competition. We will study muscles and how they enable up to do cheerleading flips and kick soccer balls. We will also experiment and design with different padding like scientists have done in order to create safer football helmets. Join the team!

After-School Facility Application Form
The purpose of this form is for a potential partner facility to request an after-school program from Classroom Antics at their location. This ensures Classroom Antics’ understanding of what is being provided by a facility for the purpose of running an after-school club at their location. This document shall be completed by the facility coordinator and submitted to Classroom Antics for their review, confirmation, and acceptance.

Our after-school programs are for students in grades K-5. There are 6 modules per school year, divided up by semester. Each module is 4 weeks long, meeting one day per week. In order for the programs to run, there is a minimum of 4 kids and maximum of 12.
Classroom Antics Requirements
To be approved to host Classroom Antics after-school programs, a school must meet the following requirements:
- Hold the after-school program in a room, such as an art or science room, that has tables appropriate for projects (not individual desks). Generally, six-foot tables or large round tables work best.
- Classroom Antics prefers to handle the registrations, but if the school must handle it, the facility must:
- Provide the after-school program roster to Classroom Antics.
- Provide Classroom Antics with the phone numbers and emails of participants’ parents, for contact or emergency.
- Provide a makeup day in-between modules for inclement weather or cancellation.
- Accept our $75/student program fee, without any split of cost. If there are costs the school needs to collect, they can be added in addition to our program fee.
- Allow Classroom Antics to send flyers home with kids from school.
