In Amazing Architects, kids learn what it means to be an Architectural Engineer and what jobs they might have. Through hands-on activities, students develop a city, design houses and build skyscrapers, and model suspension bridges while completing these tasks on a budget. Projects will model different structures, all the way from historical ancient Egyptian pyramids to modern houses. Students will learn the to ask questions, imagine, plan, create and improve by following the Engineering Design Process.
This program will introduce students to the concepts of Civil Engineering and the engineering design process through various, hands-on projects and demonstrations. Each program will be held once a week at participating schools.

Weeks 3 & 4: Ancient Egypt: Paper Cup Pyramid, Egypt Facts, Aqueduct, Paper Cup Walk, Upside Down Mobile, Balloon Zipline

In Amazing Architects after-school club, kids explore our structurally engineered world through model builds and a pretend economy. Have you ever wondered what goes into designing a building or bridge? These structures used every day must be strong enough and efficient enough to get our tasks done. Each week, students learn, discuss, and think about the world’s structures. Also, kids design and build with a number of hands-on activities.
Kids build unique skyscrapers, suspension bridges, ziplines, and more with household materials such as popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and paper cups. While building, kids consider natural disasters such as earthquakes and how they affect the design. Using these models and applying the lessons learned during the program, students build a bridge to help a family cross a river, construct a tower for people to live, and experience the reality of scarcity of materials by paying for building supplies with Monopoly money. During Amazing Architects, kids discuss scientific topics such as force and balance. This challenges them to think about physics in their own lives.
