How to Evaluate Summer Camps

Summer camps are bountiful. There are camps for every interest, age group, and expertise. But how should you evaluate which summer camp is the right one for your child? Camp can be an amazing experience for both you and your child but it is important to find out as much as you can about the camp and what they offer in advance. In order to help you with that, we have put together the list below to help guide your comparison of camps.

Questions to Ask When Evaluating Summer Camps

What are the typical backgrounds of the teachers and camp counselors?
How many kids attend each year? How many leave before camp ends? What are some of the reasons for early departures?
What’s the student-to-teacher ratio? How many kids will be in camp with my child?
If you have a child with a learning challenge, do they have experience working with similar children?
What is the daily structure of the program? What will they be working on, when, with whom, and for how long?
Is it balanced between indoor and outdoor activities?
If I provide strategies that have helped my child learn, will your staff use them?
How does camp handle issues with bad behavior? How are kids disciplined?
Who can my child talk to if there’s a problem with a counselor or with another child?
If your child has allergies, what type of food will be around?
If your child has medication, what is the camp’s policy? Do I need to give it to my child before and after camp each day? Will staff administer medication on-site?
Can parents observe their child during the camp day? (You can learn a lot with this question.)
Where can I see reviews of the camp from other parents? Is there a Google, Facebook, or Yelp page with feedback?
