USA Missing at World Robot Olympiad

On November 18-20, 2011, Abu Dhabi will play host to the 8th annual World Robot Olympiad (WRO). World Robot Olympiad is an event where teams of three students, create, design, and build robot models using LEGO Mindstorm NXT. Teams compete in one of three competition categories guided by their teachers and coaches. This year over 35 countries and over 13,000 teams from around the world will take part in WRO activities. However, according to the website the United States will not be among the participating countries.

Why is the US missing from the 2011 World Robot Olympiad?

There is interest in LEGO Robotic education and high levels of participation in the US in FIRST LEGO Leagues. Yet, it did not translate into a competitive position for a US team this year at the World Robot Olympiad. This event is very competitive. Many students competed in various qualifying stages before participating in the 2011 WRO final. Also, many of the students will have had to also compete in various local, regional, and national competitions before even qualifying to attend the WRO.

While saddened no team from the United States was able to successfully qualify for the event. We are pleased to see such global events exist. Events such as this give students throughout the world a chance to apply their knowledge in STEM. We believe solving robotic challenges such as those offered by the World Robot Olympiad builds much-needed skills in students. It also gives students a great opportunity to work together as a team and have fun while learning. If you have a child who likes robotics and you want to start them on their journey to the World Robot Olympiad. Then, think about enrolling them in either our LEGO Bots or LEGO Robotics camps this summer.
